Get Ready, Lambert's Bay: Our 2026 Coastal Cleanup Is This Saturday!
Introduction
This Saturday, 19 September, Project Sunwave is back on the sand for our biggest cleanup of the year. As part of International Coastal Cleanup Day 2026, kids from Lambert's Bay will grab their bags and gloves and head out along our coastline not for a quick tidy-up, but for a full morning of hands-on environmental learning led by our PSW team alongside Danne Joubert, Environmental Officer at Cederberg Municipality.
We'll be meeting at The Reef at 9am, splitting into small groups, and getting to work. Two groups will stay local, while two others will travel up the coast to two additional beach spots, meaning more ground covered, more litter removed, and more of our coastline looked after in a single morning.
More Than Just a Cleanup
We've said it before and we'll keep saying it: this isn't about getting an afternoon of free labour out of our kids. Every group will spend about an hour walking the beach, picking up litter, and keeping an eye out for the marine life that calls our coast home: different types of seaweed, shells, and other small discoveries along the way. The goal is curiosity as much as cleanup: we want kids leaving the beach knowing a little more about the place they just helped protect.
Tracking Our Impact, Together
Once the cleanup wraps up, all four groups will bring their bags to the Don Burrell Community Hall, where the real fun begins. The kids will help weigh what each team collected and watch the numbers add up. Team by team, kilo by kilo, as part of a short debrief on what everyone found out on the coast.
As always, every item collected will be logged using the Clean Swell app, meaning Lambert's Bay's efforts become part of a global conservation database: we contribute real data, from our kids, feeding into worldwide ocean protection efforts.
Learning Doesn't Stop at the Beach
Back at the hall, kids will watch two short videos, one on plastic pollution in our oceans, and one on kid-friendly litter education, followed by an interactive discussion. It's this combination of hands-on action and real learning that we believe makes the difference between a one-off cleanup and lasting environmental awareness.
Part of Something Bigger
This cleanup is part of International Coastal Cleanup Day, and it lines up with a national initiative that sees communities right across South Africa hosting their own cleanups on the same day. It's a proud moment for a small coastal town like Lambert's Bay to stand alongside the rest of the country, and the world, in protecting our oceans.
