A Week with Project Sunwave

Empowering Communities Through Local Action
Introduction

The Atlantic swell rolled into Lambert's Bay this week with perfect timing, just as our youth hit their stride in both skill and spirit. From stand-up paddling in the glassy morning waters to catching waves in the afternoon sun, the past few days have been a vibrant showcase of growth, grit, and joy — everything Project Sunwave stands for. As part of our ongoing programs, our 30 participants rotated through the week's activities designed to strengthen not just their swim and board skills, but also their self-belief and emotional wellbeing.

Empowering Communities Through Local Action
Starting with Stillness: SUP Mornings

We kicked off each day on the water with stand-up paddling (SUP), launching from the calm shallows near the harbor wall. The early sessions were about balance and focus, critical elements in developing water confidence — a chance for many young participants to feel powerful in themselves, standing tall against the wide horizon.

Surf Progression: From Whitewater to the Lineup

During the week, the boards got shorter and the energy spiked. Surf coaching sessions ramped up, with our surf coach rotating between beginners working on their pop-ups and more experienced surfers starting to paddle out through waves. There were plenty of "firsts" this week: first waves stood up on, first times on a surf board, first time paddling out to the backline.

Smiles All Around

The impact of the week was most visible in the smiles — on the kids, the coaches, the volunteers, and even curious beachgoers who stopped to cheer them on. There's a special energy that comes when young people feel seen, safe, and supported in nature.

What's Next?

Our focus will shift slightly to swimming skills and safety education, especially important as we head into cooler months and more unpredictable surf conditions.

Conclusion

Thank you to everyone who makes these smiles possible. Your belief in our mission is what fuels the work.
