This week brought serious stoke to Lambert’s Bay. Our Golwe kids hit the water full of energy, excitement, and brand-new gear; thanks to generous donations, each participant was able to wear a wetsuit that kept them warm and confident through the water-based session.
For many of these kids, this was their first time wearing a wetsuit ever, and the transformation was instant! Smiles widened, confidence soared, and the water felt just a little more like home.
Our program combines multiple water-based modules: surf therapy, stand-up paddleboarding, Nippers, learn-to-swim, and wetsuits are a critical part of making that access safe, inclusive, and year-round. With chilly Atlantic currents and unpredictable weather, having the right gear isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a game-changer.
“I can swim forever now!” one participant beamed, as practiced his floating during the swim skills session.
Why It Matters
At Project Sunwave, we believe in more than just teaching technical skills. We’re building resilience, connection, and joy through every moment in the water. Our holistic approach gives kids the chance to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally.
These wetsuits aren’t just pieces of gear. They represent:
Dignity: every child feels like they belong
Safety: less shivering, more learning
Sustainability: extended water time across seasons
This Week’s Highlights
Kids learning how to properly zip up, rinse, and care for their wetsuits
Our first group swim drills in full kit
Laughter echoing across the breakwater rocks (see photo above!)
The beginnings of a new season of growth, skill, and confidence
What’s Next?
With our wetsuit setup starting to come together, we’re diving headfirst into:
More learn-to-swim coaching sessions throughout the week
Nipper challenges and races
Introductory Open Days for new joiners
Upcoming Ocean safety workshops
Each week brings new waves both in the water and in our journey as a nonprofit. And we’re so grateful to have you following along.
