As the year's first quarter drew to a close, Project Sunwave rode into March with full hearts and steady energy. Thanks to the unwavering support of our donors, partners, and local community, March turned out to be one of our most active and inspiring months yet. And we're thrilled to share some highlights with you.

Program Highlights

Throughout March, our weekly sessions remained at full speed, with over twenty children attending each session. Every week, we ran five sessions, each lasting two hours, meaning our young participants received consistent, focused time in and around the water, building their confidence, skills, and connection to the ocean.

As the month closed and school holidays began, we opened our doors even wider. We hosted introductory sessions for all local children interested in joining Project Sunwave, welcoming fresh faces and offering them a taste of the empowerment and excitement that our regulars experience weekly. It was wonderful to see so many curious and enthused young people stepping into the water for the first time.

Building Skills and Confidence

March placed a strong emphasis on our swimming modules, an essential foundation for safe and joyful engagement with the ocean. Water confidence is at the core of everything we do, and we were proud to see so many of our participants making steady progress, from overcoming fears to learning vital swim techniques that will serve them for life.

Meanwhile, a significant milestone was reached with our Golwe kids (Translating to ’Waves’ from Afrikaans, our advanced main program), who began their surf journeys with guidance from our surf coach. These young surfers, many of whom had never touched a board before joining PSW, are now beginning to paddle out, catch small waves, and experience the thrill of surfing. Their excitement is contagious, and their growing independence is a powerful reflection of how sport can build self-belief.

Incredible Community Support

We are deeply grateful for the amazing generosity we witnessed this month. Thanks to kind donors from Cape Town, we received donated surfboards and wetsuits, allowing us to properly equip and facilitate the growth of more young surfers and ensure everyone could participate, regardless of their background. Having the right gear makes a huge difference, especially as temperatures begin to drop heading into winter.

Every donation, big or small, fuels our work and sends a message to these young people that their community, near and far, believes in them. We thank every supporter who helped make this possible.

Challenges and Opportunities

Of course, working with the ocean always brings its own set of challenges. March weather sometimes tested our flexibility, and ensuring enough gear for every child remained a logistical puzzle. However, our team adapted with creativity and commitment, and the children's enthusiasm never wavered.

In fact, each challenge reaffirmed why Project Sunwave exists: to create consistent opportunities for growth, resilience, and hope, even when conditions are less than perfect.

Looking Ahead: April and Beyond

As we move into April, we're excited to build on the momentum of March. With school holidays continuing, we plan to extend our outreach to new participants while deepening the skills of our regulars. We’re also preparing for winter programming, ensuring that sessions remain safe, fun, and well-supported through the changing seasons.

Every wave caught, every new skill mastered, and every moment of joy in the water is made possible by your support. Together, we’re not just teaching swimming and surfing… we're building a generation of confident, capable, and connected young people who will carry these lessons far beyond the shoreline.

If you would like to continue fueling this wave of change, consider supporting us through donations, spreading the word, or volunteering. Together, we are leaving no one behind.
